The Equinox sax ensemble gave the first performance of Nigel Wood's 'Partial Eclipse' to a capacity crowd at the de la Beche theatre in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire on 17th November 2007.
Composer and saxophonist Nigel Wood was in attendance for the performance of his unique new piece for electronic wind instrument (EWI) and saxes. Nigel was more than happy with the result, "I'm really pleased and impressed how well Partial Eclipse sounds. The blend between the EWI and saxes works even better than I'd envisaged."
The piece will be published next year by Saxtet Publications, and is scored for eight saxes and EWI. The Equinox line up includes a bass sax and a Tubax, and the piece includes some exciting and important elements for the lower register, while the solo line really shows off the EWI’s virtuosic and lyrical capabilities.
Partial Eclipse is also the title track for the group’s new CD, which includes a varied collection of other new compositions and arrangements, among them Keiron Anderson’s Closure and Boris Goes To Dublin by Alun Cook.
Established in 2005 under the direction of Alistair Parnell, Midlands-based Equinox are fast developing a reputation for presenting exciting and diverse music for the saxophone, and perform regularly in the region. More information from www.equinoxsax.org.uk.
