Peter Beaumont - Obituary

Peter Beaumont (1961-2021)
Windblowers Manager

After leaving school Pete enrolled on the woodwind making and repairing course at Newark Technical College. The years 1978-1981 were golden years, Pete learning his trade in the company of Daniel Bangham, Jeremy Walsworth, Travis Townson and Paul Carrington. More importantly, he met a lovely lady on the Equine management course, his future wife Sue. The end of course concert featured John Dankworth soloing on a clarinet jointly made by Pete.

The next 3 years were spent in the workshop of Rosehill Instruments Beaconsfield where Pete and Sue lived in a flat above the shop. Here Pete discovered and developed his remarkable people skills.

In 1984, Pete joined Howarth of London to manage their single reed department. Pete`s natural   warmth and generous nature with customers, suited his new role perfectly. Here Pete met, and befriended, the great and the good of the music industry.

During his 20 years at Howarths, having moved back to Sue`s home town of Newark after the birth of their second son, Pete`s daily commute involved a 5.30am wake up call, he always slept on the train down, and also at lunchtime (something he did for the rest of his life at Windblowers, much to the amusement of his colleagues).

Pete joined Windblowers Nottingham in 2004 as shop manager. Pete had many talents, he was an accomplished photographer as well as an outstanding musician. Oboe was his first instrument, he was blessed with a huge warm sound (much like his personality) that always stopped customers in their tracks if he happened to be demonstrating or testing after an adjustment. His musical ability did not stop at oboe, but encompassed all of the woodwind family, including the crumhorn (which he liked to keep quiet about) and he also enjoyed playing the guitar and piano.

He will be fondly remembered by customers for his expertise not just in describing the design parameters required of a mouthpiece for a certain sound but also creating that sound before their very ears with clever use of Blue Tac!

The other love of Pete`s life which he enjoyed with all of his family was athletics. Amazingly even at 60 Pete was still able to run a sub 60 second 400 metre time.

Explore more of Pete`s extensive athletic involvement by checking out the Newark Athletic Club face book posts; or for photography, and to follow the link to hear Pete playing check out www.blackwood.co.uk
